Sarah McLachlan sings John Lennon's HAPPY X'MAS (War is Over)
John Lennon,
ever the Master of Irony,
died on December 8, 1980;
on a day of the year
when one of his most popular songs
was getting constant airplay worldwide.
I grew up listening to that simple tune
with a simple plea for peace on Christmas.
To this day,
it remains on top of my Yuletide playlist,
along with perennials such as
Sinatra's Mistletoe & Holly,
Crosby's Adeste Fideles,
Cole's The Christmas Song,
Valenciano's Pasko Na, Sinta Ko,
and these two albums:
John Lennon,
for all his outward cynicism,
was the Beatle with the most unabashed,
sincere childlike wishes for the basics:
Love and Peace.
It's perfect indeed
that another unabashed romantic,
Sarah McLachlan,
has chosen to lead off her very 1st X'Mas CD
with "Happy X'Mas (war is over)".
She covers the song with affection,
with exactly the same arrangement,
a choir of children happily joining in at the end.
The Lennon Legend lives on.
And so do our hopes for wars being over.
Happy Christmas!!!
