RYAN CAYABYAB is my Philippine Idol
Boy, was he pissed last week.
When, for the 2nd consecutive elimination night,
one of the best singers was sent packing,
proving to him that the average Pinoy was voting
on the basis of cuteness;
either that,
or some of the lesser Philippine Idol finalists
had organized heavy text brigades to avoid elimination.
Although that's not surprising at all in the
Text Capital of the World, and after all,
the "IDOL" competitions are POP-ularity contests.
However,
Ryan Cayabyab must have felt that more than any nation,
the Philippines with its density of talent,
must have the best Idol,
who should easily outsing Taylor Hicks or Kelly Clarkson
any day of the week.
Sadly,
the show was becoming as silly
as one of those ABS-CBN "generate cash via text votes"
revenue bonanzas that masquerade as overwrought
Reality TV shows.
Earlier tonight,
Mr. C came out with both barrels blazing,
just as he promised last week when he said:
"I've been kind, very Pinoy;
reluctant to offend and criticize...
but next week, the gloves are off!"
Gone were the kind fatherly platitudes.
Apparent was the stern schoolmaster,
who did not hesitate to tell an underwhelming
contestant that he should not have been onstage at all.
And NO,
don't worry,
Mr. C is not turning into a Simon Cowell caricature.
There's no ego, or self-aggrandizing involved.....
Ryan Cayabyab,
future National Artist,
is simply working overtime to ensure that
The Philippine Idol should be the Pride of the Philippines.
p.s.
fuhgeddabout the histrionics over at
the Kapamilya's Pinoy Dream Academy.
while I love Pinoy Big Brother,
this latest show of ABS-CBN is a too obvious
attempt to steal the spotlight from a real
world-class production to find a world-class Pinoy Idol.
Watch PHILIPPINE IDOL!!!
Talent-wise, it leaves the U.S. version in the dust.
