HYSTERIA on WISTERIA

"Listen, Susan,
I know for a lot of women the word `menopause'
has negative connotations.
You hear `aging,' `brittle bones,' `loss of sexual desire,'""
her gynecologist tells her.

"OK, before we go any further,
can I check these diplomas?
Just to make sure they aren't,
like, from some med school in the Philippines?"
Susan fires back.

I really think that what the Desperate scriptwriter
had in mind was:
"Doctor from a South American medical school",

which is actually the comedic stereotype in American films and tv,
e.g. Dr. Riviera from The Simpsons:

But since the Philippines is always in the U.S. news,
(albeit in a mostly negative light)
and so many of Pinoy family names are Spanish in origin,

that Desperate writer probably thought
that our country is in Latin America,
and hence, that derogatory reference.

Fookin' Idiot!!

So many U.S. movies and television shows
now make references to our country;
e.g. The Emmy's Best Comedy 30 ROCK's
Tina Fey "dressed up like the Philippine President".

I'm going against the grain here,
but I believe that this issue is quite different from
that other Desperate writer, Malu Fernandez,
the really stupid bitch I pilloried last month.

I somehow look at this as a positive sign
that the Pinoy community as a whole,
is being recognized in the States as a cultural force;

the jokes are just a lazy way to categorize
our nation and our countrymen.

Once upon a time,
Italians were "dagos" and Jews were "kikes",
there were thousands of Polish jokes, etc., etc.,
the list of racial slurs is endless....

that's the American Way !!!!!!

And that's precisely the reason
why i chose not to migrate to the U.S.,
despite soooo many opportunities to do so;

underneath that veneer of racial equality,
there still is real discrimination vs. non-whites,
whether you're in sunny California or down south in Georgia.

Well, back to the hysteria on Wisteria:

personally,
i'm NOT offended.
and i'm a pre-med grad from UST,
and my best friends are all MDs.

It's a throwaway line from a
friggin' TV show that's already peaked anyway.

Teri Hatcher looks like Skeletor these days,
so different from her Lois Lane days....
no wonder her character had to mutter those lines.

It's all about
CONTEXT.

And as usual, allow me to please
blame our President for not projecting
a better image for the Philippines.
She sounds like a duck, walks like a duck,
and is now a fookin' lame duck!!

Most of the news coming out of the Philippines
really does project the Pinoys
as a silly bunch who can't get their act together,

no thanks to PRC, ZTE, FG & GMA,
and other high-profile alphabetical P.R. disasters
that are covered by American media.

Don't worry too much though,
this guy will redeem our country's honor this Sunday,
and knock out this Desperate issue in the 1st round:

hayyyy....................

i really should run for office
if only to have a platform to rant about these things.

(but the Barangay Elections may not even push through.
no Comelec Chairman and no budget!

Only in the Philippines... '',)

I was waiting in what you were going to say about this. I was getting tired of reading all your basketball entries.
I was watching this episode with my American husband and when we heard it, we laughed so hard. Besides, Susan's character, which I really hate is known to be stupid anyway, so really, it was nothing.
I wish we could all get together though and put or foot down with other pressing issues like that broadband deal. THAT needs serious addressing. Can we ask all people involved for a public apology for their corruption?
Run for office nalang kasi eh. The best part of it is that you have no first lady to distract or tempt you. Ay sorry- did I seal your fate to single blessedness?

the Filipinos are so pikon if they even wanna ban Desperate Housewives for that "racial slur". we filipinos also make a lot of "racial slurs" on Indians, Muslim, Chinese, Japanese, black persons, etc. but all as a joke.

i believe what the scriptwriter had in mind was that Filipino doctors become nurses in the US anyway so our med schools are no good. can we blame them for thinking that way?

I also don't find the joke insulting.
