aBOSSAdo na ang Bossa Nova
NOT another Bossa Nova CD!!!
another pritti sitti wannabe;
this time, VIVA's entry:
The newest girl to join the bossa nova club
is Raffi Quijano of Cebu.
The vice president of the Samahang Kabataan of Cebu City,
her album is entitled Manila Blend
and distinguishes itself from the other bossa nova CDs
with its all Filipino line-up.
Produced by Alwyn Cruz with arrangements by Victor Oria,
it includes songs from the Manila Sound era
of the late '70s and early '80s
and as though boasting of the fact
that Pinoys do have a Latin heritage,
all of them sound great redone with a bossa nova beat.
The first single out is Odette Quesada's Friend of Mine.
The others are Gotta Let You Know, O Lumapit Ka,
Ikaw Pa Rin, Tag-araw Tag-ulan, May Minamahal,
Love Without Time, A Samba Song, Everyday,
Don't Know What to Say, Sa Aking Pag-iisa,
Till I Met You, You Won't See Me Crying
and Ikaw Lamang.
I love Sitti,
but not necessarily the bandwagon effect
she inadvertently created.
The VST & Co. Bossa Nova album was excellent,
and that was mainly due to the wonderful arrangements
of the songs by the Pinoy Disco SuperGroup
that Vic Sotto (!) sang lead for,
truly great BeeGees/EarthWind&Fire-inspired OPM.
but the rest of the local Bossa Nova CDs
sound like quickie productions
of over-gooey retro pop songs,
recorded by unknown singers (read: low talent fee)
under the guidance of sloth-like record executives.
What's next...
HAGIBIS BOSSA NOVA?
My friend Jimmy Jam,
Betrayed Rockstar & Iconic LS-FM DJ,
gave the most fitting commentary on this Bossa Abuse:
"..Ah isa pa, isa pa aandar na..
konting urong lang, isa pa yan..
...and the bossa bandwagon
takes on yet another passenger.
This is the kind of mediocrity that
sets OPM back decades.. sigh..
record company marketing working
to grab your hard-earned bucks!
Don't be fooled by their pretty faces,
but for hapless males like my good friend Spanx,
it's too late for him
hehehehe.."

Damn Spanky you hit it right on the money.
I love bossa nova (even before it became a fad it was fab for me already).
I appreciate the fact that more people are appreciating the genre, but I hate it when business takes over art.
Of all the local brew, I like the VST collection most. Lupit niya. Sitti is ok but to be honest, minsan over the top ng konti...medyo stretchy.
I have been reading your blog 2-3x a day (together with Nostalgia Manila) ever since I transferred to Singapore a month ago for work. The two blogs keep me sane here.
By the way, I am a good friend of your sis, Tina as well as your cousin-in-law, Roxanne. We were in the same barkada in UP-Dil. Please send my regards and if you guys happen to envision visiting the Lion City, my guest room is at your disposal.
vj,
that VST CD is the constant soundtrack you'll hear in mama roxanne's country home. dabest talaga!
and yup, i remember you, syempre. all the best to you with the merlions,
and thanks for reading my blog ",
