in the name of love: The Queen Knights BONO

from Time Magazine's 2005 Man of the Year
to Knighthood in 2006
,
U2's frontman is now recognized as
A Leader of the Free World....

from www.cnn.com:

LONDON, England

Bono --
the Irish rock star, anti-poverty campaigner, and philanthropist --
has been awarded an honorary British knighthood,
the British Embassy in Dublin said on Saturday.

"The British Embassy in Dublin
takes great pleasure in announcing that
Her Majesty The Queen has appointed Bono
to be an honorary Knight Commander
of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire

in recognition of his services to the music industry
and for his humanitarian work,"
according to an embassy news release.

The British ambassador to Ireland, David Reddaway, is to give Bono
an "insignia of this honorary award" after New Year's
in a ceremony in the Irish capital.

The embassy pointed out that titles such as "Sir" or "Dame"
do not come with such honorary awards,
"conferred on citizens of countries
of which The Queen is not Head of State."

Bono is an Irish citizen.
Bob Geldof, the Irish rock star who organized the Live Aid concerts,
got the same award in 1986.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair said the award is well-deserved
for Bono's "remarkable" humanitarian work
and for his "outstanding contribution" to music with U2.

"I'll leave it to others far more knowledgeable than me
to talk about U2's music.
All I'll say is that,
along with millions of others right across the world,
I am a huge fan.

"But I feel a little more qualified
to talk about your personal commitment
to tackling global poverty and,
in particular, to Africa,"
Blair said in a letter to Bono
posted on the prime minister's office Web site.

"I want personally to thank you
for the invaluable role you played
in the run up to the Gleneagles G8 Summit.

"Without your personal contribution,
we could not have achieved the results we did.
So thank you and I look forward
to continuing to work together to maintain momentum on Africa,
and ensure leaders around the world meet the promises they have made."

Taiwan quake disrupts RP Internet,
telephone connections

By Erwin Oliva
06:45pm 12/27/2006

A "fiber break" in the major submarine cables
linking the Philippines to the international network
caused a nationwide disruption in Internet and telephone services,
local telecommunications company said Wednesday.

The Philippines’ links to the Internet
were damaged following a 7.1 magnitude earthquake
that struck Taiwan early Wednesday.

"These are major submarine cables linking
the Philippines to the United States.
We said earlier that it was only the Internet
but apparently it has affected international voice calls,"
John Rojo, head of corporate communications of Bayantel,
in a telephone interview.

The Annual SEARING of the HOC SHIU

The BEATLES Chill Out

As if you need any more proof that The Beatles
are more omnipresent now than ever before,

look no further than:

1. the LOVE album sold out in most MMLA record stores;

2. the (albeit muzak-y) BossaNova Beatles CD
receiving constant airplay in Music One;

3. the finger-snappin' CD of Beatles covers
played by a jazz trio of piano, bass, drums;

4. John's younger son, Sean Lennon,
guesting on CONAN last night;

5. and this cool CD I spotted this afternoon:

"Classic Beatles tunes,
re-imagined and re-grooved
by influential artists from the
electronica, chillout, and downtempo scenes."

tracklist:

1. tomorrow never knows
2. while my guitar gently weeps
3. blackbird
4. two of us
5. something
6. eleanor rigby
7. lucy in the sky with diamonds
8. strawberry fields forever
9. let it be
10. hey jude
11. i want you (she's so heavy)
12. come together
13. because

The BEST Movie Scene of 2006???

Movie Critics are going absolutely NUTS
about JENNIFER HUDSON's showstopping
performance in the movie adaptation of
the Broadway classic, DREAMGIRLS.

The American Idol Season 3 finalist
(same batch as Pinays Jasmine Trias & Camille Velasco)
who rocked my world with her performance of
"Weekend in New England",

has already secured a Golden Globe nomination
for Best Supporting Actress.

With orgasmic raves such as the ones below,
I'm betting that an OSCAR nod is a lock as well!!!

"If Jennifer Hudson never makes another movie,
she will have earned a modest but honorable place
in film history on the basis of her performance in "Dreamgirls."

The mind keeps returning to Hudson.

Here's one last thing:
I've been going to the movies a long time.
This is the first time I ever saw people sit during the closing credits,
just so they could cheer when a performer's name came up.
"

"...former "American Idol" finalist Jennifer Hudson
deserves a recount. In fact,
they should cancel the TV show.

No one who's been on "American Idol" -
or is likely to be -
has the pipes of this young lady
.

When she sings "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" -
one of the most heartfelt cries of pain ever written for a musical -
Hudson inscribes her name on an Oscar."

"...notably Hudson's show-stopping,
heart-wrenching And I Am Telling You (I'm Not Going).

It's a rare thing for a movie audience
to burst into spontaneous applause after an on-screen musical number,
but it happened at my screening,
and others
."

"...the number belongs to Jennifer Hudson,
and her star-making rendition
is going to raise goose bumps across the land.

With her powerhouse voice,
Hudson turns this Henry Krieger/Tom Eyen song
into a heartbreaking yelp of anguish so potent,

one preview audience gave it a standing ovation
.

That's not supposed to happen in movie theaters."

"The title of the film is "Dreamgirls"
but it could have been called "A Star Is Born."

Former "American Idol" contestant Jennifer Hudson
absolutely walks away with this big, splashy dazzler of a picture,
based on the 1981 Broadway musical,
even before performing her plaintive, showstopping number,
"And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going."

And that's quite a feat.

And by the way, who was it that won "American Idol"
the season she was on there?

Never mind — she turned out more than fine,
with or without Simon Cowell's help."

FANTASIA who?

take a bow, MR. ARENAS!!!

Kobe Bryant scored 45 points,
but still got outscored by 15,
on his Los Angeles homecourt (!),

by the Washington Wizards' Golden Boy,
GILBERT ARENAS.

An L.A. native,
the top gun of the visiting Wiz
(who have the most Bling*Bling uniforms in the NBA)

gave an early Christmas gift
to the 70 or so family and friends,
including his High School Coach,
whom he gave tickets to the game,

by dropping 60 on the home team.

The last player to punish the Lakers that way?

Wilt Chamberlain!!!

I heart BBC!!!

Seriously,
how would we DVD-lovers survive without PIRACY?

The meager and over-priced selections available
at Music One, Powerbooks, O,
and the charmingly retro-named SM Record Bars,
are almost insulting.

Then again,
you have Makati Cinema Square, Metrowalk,
and the mecca that is Quiapo.

This weekend,
I was able to get these ultimate BBC bargains,
each with the all-important accurate subtitles,
for P80.00 each:

1. Ricky Gervais' original THE OFFICE
> though it ran for only two seasons,
this UK version paved the way for the equally-genius
US version of Steve carell,
which has already, at 30+ episodes,
surpassed the original series.

> the other dibidi in this package has the complete
22 episodes of Season 2 of the U.S. version. WOW!

n.b. TV "Seasons" are called "SERIES" in the UK,
and instead of the 22-24 episodes in the US,
each "Series" only has 6 episodes.

2. COUPLING
> the BBC show that will make you forget
that those overly-wholesome yet borderline incestuous
New Yorkers of FRIENDS ever existed.

3. HUSTLE
> the real progeny of the Rat Pack's Ocean's Eleven,
and the true spiritual heir of Newman/Redford's The Sting.

4. LITTLE BRITAIN
> too funny for words,
the United Kingdom as seen through
a deliciously warped looking glass!!!

The DQ Ice Cream SANDWICH!!!

How can you NOT Love This???

It's reduced fat ice cream,
It's got two cookies (!),
It's from childhood fave DAIRY QUEEN,

and

a Box of Six only goes for P199!!!

This brings back memories of the long lost
and much missed:

a) Magnolia Ice Cream Sandwich
b) Coney Island's Chocolate Chip Cookie version
c) Presto's Chocolate-Dipped variant

DAIRY QUEEN
is now under the Araneta's food conglomerate,
joining Pizza Hut and Taco Bell,

according to the extremely well-versed
(but overly made-up)
counter staff at the branch right outside
Araneta Coliseum that's connected to the Gateway Mall.

As such,
the pretty frontliner said,
loyal customers can expect more consistent quality
and real DQ quality.

And the quality extends to the service as well;

when I mentioned that I would be bringing home
the box of DQ Sandwiches to Manila,
she carefully packed it in crushed ice for me.

Nice!

p.s.
ORANGE JULIUS is now housed with DQ too!!!

Congratulations, BLOGGERS, FRIENDSTERS, MULTIPLY-ers, etc., etc.!!!

Yes, YOU.

You control the Information Age.

Welcome to YOUR world.

from www.time.com:
Dec. 25, 2006 issue of TIME magazine

The "Great Man" theory of history
is usually attributed to the Scottish philosopher Thomas Carlyle,
who wrote that
"the history of the world is but the biography of great men."

He believed that it is the few,
the powerful and the famous
who shape our collective destiny as a species.

That theory took a serious beating this year.

To be sure, there are individuals we could blame
for the many painful and disturbing things that happened in 2006.

The conflict in Iraq only got bloodier and more entrenched.
A vicious skirmish erupted between Israel and Lebanon.
A war dragged on in Sudan.
A tin-pot dictator in North Korea got the Bomb,
and the President of Iran wants to go nuclear too.

Meanwhile nobody fixed global warming,
and Sony didn't make enough PlayStation3s.

But look at 2006 through a different lens
and you'll see another story,
one that isn't about conflict or great men.

It's a story about community and collaboration
on a scale never seen before.

It's about the cosmic compendium of knowledge
Wikipedia and the million-channel people's network YouTube
and the online metropolis MySpace.

It's about the many wresting power from the few
and helping one another for nothing
and how that will not only change the world,
but also change the way the world changes.

The tool that makes this possible is the World Wide Web.

Not the Web that Tim Berners-Lee hacked together
(15 years ago, according to Wikipedia)
as a way for scientists to share research.

It's not even the overhyped dotcom Web of the late 1990s.

The new Web is a very different thing.
It's a tool for bringing together
the small contributions of millions of people
and making them matter.

Silicon Valley consultants call it Web 2.0,
as if it were a new version of some old software.
But it's really a revolution.

And we are so ready for it.

We're ready to balance our diet of predigested news
with raw feeds from Baghdad and Boston and Beijing.

You can learn more about how Americans live
just by looking at the backgrounds of YouTube videos—
those rumpled bedrooms and toy-strewn basement rec rooms—
than you could from 1,000 hours of network television.

And we didn't just watch, we also worked.
Like crazy.

We made Facebook profiles and Second Life avatars
and reviewed books at Amazon and recorded podcasts.

We blogged about our candidates losing
and wrote songs about getting dumped.

We camcordered bombing runs and built open-source software.

America loves its solitary geniuses—
its Einsteins, its Edisons, its Jobses—
but those lonely dreamers may have to learn to play with others.

Car companies are running open design contests.
Reuters is carrying blog postings alongside its regular news feed.
Microsoft is working overtime to fend off user-created Linux.

We're looking at an explosion of productivity and innovation,
and it's just getting started,
as millions of minds that would otherwise
have drowned in obscurity get backhauled
into the global intellectual economy.

Who are these people?

Seriously, who actually sits down after a long day at work and says,
I'm not going to watch Lost tonight.
I'm going to turn on my computer
and make a movie starring my pet iguana?

I'm going to mash up 50 Cent's vocals with Queen's instrumentals?

I'm going to blog about my state of mind
or the state of the nation
or the steak-frites at the new bistro down the street?

Who has that time and that energy and that passion?

The answer is, you do.

And for seizing the reins of the global media,
for founding and framing the new digital democracy,
for working for nothing and beating the pros at their own game,

TIME's Person of the Year for 2006 is you.

Sure,
it's a mistake to romanticize all this
any more than is strictly necessary.

Web 2.0 harnesses the stupidity of crowds as well as its wisdom.

Some of the comments on YouTube
make you weep for the future of humanity
just for the spelling alone,
never mind the obscenity and the naked hatred.

But that's what makes all this interesting.

Web 2.0 is a massive social experiment,
and like any experiment worth trying, it could fail.

There's no road map
for how an organism that's not a bacterium
lives and works together on this planet
in numbers in excess of 6 billion.

But 2006 gave us some ideas.
This is an opportunity
to build a new kind of international understanding,
not politician to politician,
great man to great man,

but citizen to citizen,
person to person.

It's a chance for people
to look at a computer screen and really, genuinely wonder
who's out there looking back at them.

Go on.
Tell us you're not just a little bit curious.

Her pop success achieved 4 Top 10 singles,

RAPE and MAGIC

It's difficult to blog about Food or Films
when your nation has just survived an attempted RAPE.

The suspects may have pulled up their zippers for now,
but they're definitely still on the loose,
and biding their time,
waiting for the perfect opportunity,
should our country let its guard down again.

It's best to remain vigilant still.

Rape is not a sexual crime;
it's a perverted abuse of power.

Let's prove to those maladjusted psychopaths
in the House of Rape-resentatives
that their preferred victims are empowered too.

The past 20 years may have made us jaded.

Perhaps,
the words "PEOPLE POWER" don't have the charms
they once had,

but I believe that the power still exists;
it's been hidden,
but it's definitely still there.

If used judiciously and in a timely manner,
Pinoys can bring back the magic.

This morning, I was fortunate enough to attend
WATCH and PRAY:
Magmalasakit para sa Bayan
,
a meeting for this Sunday's Prayer Rally at the Luneta.

Organized by the MAPSA,
the Manila Archdiocesan & Parochial Schools Association,

the venue was filled to the rafters
with Bishops, Priests, and Nuns,
leaders of practically all the Catholic Schools,
Colleges, and Universities in MetroManila,

all soberly and intelligently discussing the conduct
of this Sunday's massive event.

It's going to be a gathering for prayer;

prayers for strength,
prayers for courage,
prayers for wisdom,

but mostly,
prayers of thanksgiving.

And for the first time in Philippine History,

the Catholic Church,
the Iglesia ni Cristo,
the Jesus Is Lord Movement,
the El Shaddai,
and our Muslim brethren,

will all join hands in prayer in historic Luneta.

MAGIC INDEED!
